Day 14 - 5/28/2001 - Vatican Vacation (aka Deja vu day)

Weather: Hot and clear (90 F)!
Location: Rome/Vatican City

Today we started bright and early by taking the metro to Vatican City to take a tour of the Museum, Vatican, and Sistine Chapel.

We met the tour group in St. Peter's Square. Then we went to the Vatican Museum and learned about the chapel's roof.

In the museum, we saw sculpture that influenced Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling!

At the end of the museum, we saw the ceiling and the wall. I took a few pictures (shh ... don't tell!) but there was not enough light so they didn't come out.

After that, we went inside St. Peter's Basilica! (The Pope Church). It is the home of the only signed work of Michelangelo. It's the statue of Mary holding Christ's body.

See ... you're not alone --->

Then we headed over the "Pantheon" to see the interior (like we promised our tour guide).

We saw the tomb of Raphael there (on the bottom). The "Pantheon" housed the remains of Victor Emanuel II, Raphael, and some other King, too.

After that, we ran to the train station and hopped on a train to Florence. It's first class (by accident!) and will be getting there in about a half-hour! That's where we are now (and I finished my Star Wars book, so I had nothing better to do!) =)
