Day 6 - 9/14/2002 - To infinity … and beyond!

Weather: Rainy :(
Location: Big Island, Hawaii!

We made it to the airport with plenty of time to spare for our inter-island flight from Oahu to the big island. We landed on what looked like the moon … except with palm trees. The soil was jet black! We rented another convertible! (They bumped us up to a Sebring again!)

We started our coffee tour today! We started off by going to a chocolate shop, then headed to a garden sales place. Neither have much to do with coffee, but they are on the tour, just the same. :)

The best place we stopped at was a town that was 2 blocks long named Holualoa. They were celebrating an Aloha Festival today! That means … tons of free coffee samples! :) We tried all different kinds (and even bought some from a local woman). (100% pure Kona coffee). The festival was nice, too. They had tents set up with different foods. I got two "sticks of meat." It's funny, though, because we went through a classy art store after that and there I was … chowing down on a couple of sticks of meat.

We ate lunch at a coffee shop with a stage out back where they had live coffee-shop-style music. We were the only one's there. We had a couple of sandwiches and iced coffees. It's a weird atmosphere. Picture the deep south if it were run by hippies. :)

After we made it through the town, we managed to find our next hotel, a cute bed a breakfast place at 1,100 ft elevation. To get to that elevation, you have to drive up the only road in town through windy curves. It's really scary!

We checked in (incredible place with awesome views) and headed down to the "place of refuge." It was fun. It was hysterical, too, because we bought tickets at the front gate and the forest ranger there was absolutely flaming! It was all Hilary and I could do to keep from laughing while this gay forest ranger tells us where all the major sites are. He was a very nice guy and very helpful!

Afterwards, we found a 7-11 type place and picked up some sandwiches. Big mistake! We should have gone down the street where they had a nice sandwich shop overlooking a cliff! Ah well… hindsight is 20/20.

We headed back to our place and it started raining. We were determined, though, and went into the infinity pool/hot tub to watch the sun set on the ocean.

After that, we did some laundry … okay … Hilary did some laundry :) and we checked our email and watched the beginning of "The Andromeda Strain" but we were exhausted! We didn't finish the movie so we jut finished the laundry and went to bed.
